How do you get over the post Burning Man depression?Answer:
Dance all night and swim all day with a few thousand of your new best friends.
This perfect combination of all night music and a gorgeous lake highlighted an epic five days at Symbiosis Gathering. Symbiosis was held in Oakdale, California, a mere 90 miles southeast of San Francisco. The event was very family friendly and even had an area called “Kidsiosis,” which had activities for kids and their parents.
Throughout the weekend, attendees experienced a myriad of lectures led by leaders in the field, art of all shapes and colors, yoga, and more music than you could imagine. With up to six stages going at once, the festival had a wide variety of music to choose from. Each stage had its own look and feel to it but they all shared one thing in common - above average to perfect sound.
The crowd is as close to the “Burner” crowd as you will find, which means they are festival professionals. Everyone is approachable, open, cleaner than other festival goers, and they dance their asses off. They also know how to simply chill and relax, as the lake was filled with people hanging out and soaking in the good times and sunshine.
The big act of the weekend was STS9
, who delivered a mind blowing set, as usual. Other highlights of the weekend were VibeSquaD
, Pumpkin, Russ Liquid, AN-TEN-NAE, Michael Menert, and Love and Light
Along with all the good, there were definitely some areas where Symbiosis dropped the ball. The program was 30+ pages and it made finding out who was playing at each stage very frustrating (it was also a big waste of paper). The schedules also didn’t arrive until late Thursday night, which caused attendees to miss some of their favorite artists that day.
Overall it was a fun festival to attend, so make sure to look into it next year. Symbiosis changes location every year, but you can always count on music that goes all night, lots of beautiful art, and a crowd that you will love.

A collaboration of insomniacs and mad scientists on a mission to create massive, mind-bending atmospheres, Symbiosis sets out to revel in the absurd nature of the human paradox. It is a social experiment founded on the five Rs of ecological living– Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Respect and Restore–participants shared a deep commitment to creating a green gathering on every possible level.
Since 2005, Symbiosis Events has earned a worldwide reputation for delivering transformational peak experiences through a fusion of nightly art and music mixed with daytime workshops for mind, body and beyond. Past Symbiosis Gatherings in the Santa Cruz Mountains, Angels Camp, and Yosemite National Park and recent Solar Eclipse Gatherings in Pyramid Lake and Eclipse 2012 ion Australia have attracted thousands of evolutionaries from around the world.
In collaboration with NASA, Symbiosis has also produced entertainment for Yuri’s Night, an annual convergence of artists, scientists, performers and musicians commemorating space exploration and education and honoring the first person to enter space and orbit Earth in 1961.
